 City and Guilds 7303-01
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
If you want to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector in England (all post 16 education – including FE, adult and community learning, work-based learning and offender education) you’ll need to complete this new City & Guilds introductory qualification as a stepping stone to teaching.
What is the 7303 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector?
The Award is an entry point and introduction for those new to teaching and training or those wishing to teach or train in the Lifelong Learning Sector. It is the appropriate qualification for those seeking a ‘stepping stone’ to qualifications that entitle them to teach in either an ‘Associate Teacher’ or ‘Full Teacher’ role*. It confers with the newly required ‘threshold license to teach’ in the Further Education (FE) teaching sector.
*Definitions of Associate Teacher and Full Teacher roles in relation to the Lifelong Learning Sector in England are available from the FAQs section on the City & Guilds QTLS microsite, www.cityandguilds.com/qtls, or from www.lluk.org.uk.
How is the Award constructed?
The 7303 Award comprises just one unit, entitled ‘Preparing to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector’ which is based on the teaching/training cycle. It is built up of five sections which are assessed by the completion of two assessments, one theory and one practical.
The Award has a credit value of six credits on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and, consists of 30 contact and 30 non-contact hours (which cover taught-time and personal study time).
What will I learn and do?
During your programme of study you will:
- learn about the professional role and responsibilities of the teacher/trainer
- gain an introduction to the principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation
- develop knowledge and understanding of session planning, and plan your own session(s)
- produce a scheme(s) of work
- practice delivery of a teaching session through small scale micro teach session(s).
The 7303 Award is very hands-on, and will not only introduce the basic theory behind teaching, but also develop your core presentation and practical skills, building your confidence in delivering learning to small and large groups of learners.
You can study this Award at either level 3 or level 4, but you will not need to do both. You will decide which level to take with your tutor when you start the course, but may have the opportunity to achieve the level 4 if your work is considered to have met that standard by your centre’s course team.
Does this qualification form part of a recognized framework?
The City & Guilds 7303 level 3/4 Award in Preparing to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) has been designed to provide progression to the new 7304 City & Guilds level 3/4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) and the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).
These qualifications confer with the required skills and knowledge to fill the newly named ‘Associate Teacher’ and ‘Full Teacher’ roles in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
Candidates may carry forward the 6 credits achieved through the PTLLS Award into both CTLLS and DTLLS, as it forms a mandatory introductory unit for both qualifications.
