News - New Strategy Boosts Training Workforce

Lifelong Learning UK has launched a new strategy to support the development of the further education workforce in England, designed to be used as a tool to help the further education sector achieve its development goals.

During the coming year, the further education workforce will deliver teaching and training to around 4.5 million publicly funded learners, including around 1.5 million young people. In a recession it is more important than ever that learning providers can retain and develop a workforce that is equipped to meet the changing needs of individual learners, their communities and the businesses that employ them.

By using the strategy, further education providers – including specialist colleges, work based learning providers and adult and community learning providers – can react to the changing needs of learners and their employers, and ensure their own workforce weathers these difficult times through the delivery of an excellent service.

‘Changes’ campaign
Part of the strategy is ‘Changes’, a campaign to help learning providers cope with changes in the sector by reminding them that there is free information and advice available from the Lifelong Learning UK Information and Advice Service. An information pack, with postcards and posters about changes in the sector and where to get help, is being distributed to learning providers in the further education sector across England.

The Information and Advice Service can answer questions about changes to the further education sector, including the requirement to gain the appropriate professional status and to carry out continuing professional development, as well as other questions relating to careers in further education.

Embracing change
David Hunter, chief executive of Lifelong Learning UK said:

“It is vital for the UK economy that learning providers ensure their workforce is appropriately trained, and keeps up-to-date with professional development. The resources in the workforce strategy and the ‘Changes’ campaign will benefit everyone in the sector and help to build on their existing skills and talents. More than ever, we need a workforce that can embrace change and respond positively to the opportunities and challenges it brings”.
