News - LSC support for Third Sector National Learning Alliance

The LSC is pleased to announce that it has awarded a short contract to the Third Sector National Learning Alliance (TSNLA).

The contract is to ensure that the third sector in England are communicated with, and supported through the transition from the LSC (as a key funder of learning and skills provision) to two new agencies, the Skills Funding Agency and the Young Peoples Learning Agency.

The contract will also enable the development of a toolkit resource for the new agencies to further understand the contribution of the third sector in achieving good outcomes for learners in learning and skills.

The LSC has worked hard to maintain and enhance our working relationships with the third sector, as employers, training providers and a source of expertise in reaching out to learners from diverse backgrounds, and communities. We want to ensure that these relationships remain strong at this time of transition, and that the third sector has the knowledge and skills to continue their relationships with the new agencies as we move forward.

Tim Ward, Chair of TSNLA said “The third sector works with the most disadvantaged in our society helping them improve their life chances through developing their personal and work skills. Thanks to this support from the LSC, we will be able to help third sector organisations maintain this vital role in partnership with the new learning and skills agencies”.

Cheryl Turner, LSC Senior Policy Manager for the third sector said " the LSC is delighted to be awarding this short contract for work to a consortium of third sector organisations forming an alliance under the umbrella of the Third Sector National Learning Alliance. Its an exciting project that will benefit the LSC, the third sector and the successor agencies, and its great to see the sector working together to deliver this contract for us"

The LSC have now entered into a period of change following the Machinery of Government changes. By 2010 there will be new structures and arrangements for the planning and allocation of funds for education and training in both 16-18 and 19+ age groups.

The current slowdown in the economy also poses major challenges to individuals and employers and the education and skills agenda. Through our provider network the LSC must ensure that we respond flexibly to meet the needs of employers and individuals.

The LSC’s focus for the next year is on three key priorities for delivery:

  1. Meeting the Needs of Young People
  2. Improving Adult Skills
  3. Reforming the FE System

This project fits within priority 1 and 2.

The TSNLA have brought together the following organisations for this contract:

  • NAVCA
  • ACEVO
  • Third Sector European Network
  • NIACE
  • Skills-Third Sector
  • Derbyshire Learning and Development Consortium (DLDC)
  • Lancashire Learning Consortium
  • Learning Curve
