Kick off the new year by learning motivational dialogue skills online

The start of a new decade is a great time to focus on motivating learners. Motivational dialogue is a process you can use to help learners explore for themselves the benefits of, and their feelings about, behaviour change. Log on to the Excellence Gateway to learn the skills and techniques of motivational dialogue online. This resource, which includes six motivational dialogue role plays with learners with different obstacles to their learning, has been developed by LSIS with motivational dialogue experts Paul Lalgee and Ted Daszkiewicz. It is derived from Motivational Interviewing, an approach originated by Professors William R Miller and Stephen Rollnick.

Put a date in your diary to hear Sugata Mitra

Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University,  Sugata Mitra was the driving force behind the  Hole in the wall project which showed that given access to technology (literally a computer in a wall) slum children of New Delhi could learn how to use computers by themselves. You can hear Professor Mitra speak about technology and inclusion at the CETT for Inclusive Learning conference on 13 March at Northumbria University. There will be ten workshops run by learners and teaching staff exploring technology in the learning process. For more information email joyce.charlton@northumbria.ac.uk

Log onto e-CPD monthly forums

The e-CPD online learning space (OLS) holds monthly forums for PDAs and E-Guides to discuss advice and tips, and recommend resources they have found invaluable in supporting their work. February's forum topic, which is online from 1 - 19 February, is 'How can we best use e-learning to assess our learners?' If you haven't signed up as a member of the OLS yet, you can register here.

Want to know what learners think makes a great teacher?

Find out what attributes and skills members of the National Learner Panel (NLP) believe make a great teacher by downloading a pdf of their report. The report was produced when a sub-group of the Panel met with the Institute for Learning (IfL) as part of IfL's focus to raise the profile of the professional status of teachers. High on NPL's list of qualities of a professional teacher are passion and enthusiasm, creativity and inventiveness, fairness and flexibility.

Teacher training - explore the new qualifications

WMCETT and the Forum, a group of Midlands universities, are holding a series of Professional Dialogue seminars, which are day-long meetings for representatives of teacher training teams at the universities' partner FE colleges. Information about the first two and a detailed report from the first are now available on the WMCETT website.
The third and final seminar is being held at the University of Warwick on 19 March, and will look at how the new teaching qualifications meet the needs of the sector and current trainees, and what may be missing. To find out more email J.chamberlain@warwick.ac.uk

Access new equality and diversity tools

EECETT is sharing a two-part equality and diversity toolkit it has developed online. The tool is in two sections. The first is a quality review for individuals or teams to assess existing resources and practice. The second is a checklist for observing good practice. It is intended as either a prompt for initial teacher trainers or managers carrying out lesson observations or as a prompt for practitioners to self-assess their current teaching and learning practice.
