News - Supporting Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL within Integrated Employment and Skills Programmes

Wednesday 31 March 2010, 9:30am to 1:15pm

Cambridge Professional Development Centre,
Foster Road, Trumpington, Cambridge CB2 9NL

Background

For many people, low skills continue to be a key barrier to gaining sustained employment.
Improving the prospects of the most disadvantaged in society and enhancing their chances to progress and join the workforce requires partnerships at both a strategic and an operational level.

The Department for Work and Pensions, JobcentrePlus and the Learning and Skills Council have worked together to develop joint commissioning plans. Partnerships between providers and employers will help to design services that support individuals and offer personalised training resulting in a more integrated employment and skills service. Implementing training for individuals to gain sustained employment will be a change of focus for a number of organisations.

Some providers have traditionally been job rather than skills focused and others have experience of delivering courses that concentrate on learning and skills with qualifications. All providers need to integrate these two activities and target delivery so that the joint aims of skills development and sustainable work can be achieved.

Aims to:

  • identify effective practice
  • continue to build capacity within the sector by supporting providers to identify and address the literacy, language and numeracy skills needs of their learners.

Audience

  • Managers from prime contractors and subcontractors including FE colleges, voluntary
and community sector and specialist providers
  • Managers and literacy, language and numeracy tutors involved in delivering integrated skills and employment programmes.
  • Agencies and intermediaries involved in referring employers and potential learners, including Nextstep, JCP and Sector Skills Councils.
