News - FREE ICT online courses for CaMeL participants

Have you ever wondered which of the many tools available online or on your computer might help with teaching and learning? Do you want to learn more about how some of these tools work? Or learn which ones could be used for collaborating with others online?

NIACE are running three online workshops:

  • Tools for the Classroom (Accessibility Tools)

  • Introductory Working Collaboratively Online

  • (Pilot course) Using Multimedia to enhance resources and engage learners (Images, Audio and Video).
These workshops will take place through a combination of the online classroom tool Instant Presenter and the NIACE Moodle.

Places are FREE for participants who work in organisations that have received CaMeL funding. There will be a course fee of £55 for participants from organisations that have not received CaMeL funding. Places on the Pilot course “Using Multimedia to enhance resources and engage learners” will be free to all participants.

The workshops are aimed at all staff who are involved with the delivery of learning. We don’t expect workshop participants to have previous experience using Instant Presenter or the NIACE Moodle but you should have basic IT skills and an enthusiasm for e-learning. You’ll need to have a computer with broadband internet and be able to listen to sound.

In addition to learning about tools that can help you with your teaching, your attendance on the workshops contributes to your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements and if you complete the workshop, you will receive a certificate at the end.

Further details about each course are below:

Introductory Working Collaboratively Online:

  • Live session: Tuesday 16th March 2010, 9.30-12.30 (delivered in Instant Presenter)

  • (Participants will also need to spend around 45 minutes before the 16th March completing a pre-workshop task)

  • Group Task: Tuesday 16th March to Friday 19th March (delivered in Moodle. The task will require around 2.5 – 3 hours from each participant during these days)

The aim of this workshop is to explore a selection of online collaborative tools and their uses to support and enhance teaching and learning. Participants will be learning about and experimenting with online collaborative tools such as Twitter, EtherPad, Text Wall and discussion forums and exploring their uses in teaching and learning.
(Overall workshop time commitment: 6.5 hours of CPD)

Using Multimedia to enhance resources and engage learners (this is a pilot course):

  • First live online session: Tuesday 23rd March 2010, 10.00-12.00 (delivered in Instant Presenter)

  • 2 days offline to complete a variety of activities (activity resources in Moodle)

  • Second live session: Friday 26th March 2010, 10.00-12.00 (delivered in Moodle)

The aim of this workshop is to explore how images, audio files and video files can be used to enhance learning resources and engage learners. Participants will consider good practice in the use of multimedia, as well as practical skills for incorporating multimedia into resources. Participants will also be introduced to a range of freely available tools for creating and editing images, audio, and video. Access to a digital camera, digital video camera and voice recorder (or device such as a mobile phone which has this functionality) will be useful to participants, but not essential to take part in the course.
(Overall workshop time commitment: 7.5 hours of CPD)

Tools for the Classroom:

  • First live online session: Tuesday 20th April 2010, 10.00-12.00 (delivered in Instant Presenter)

  • 2 days offline to complete a task relating the tools to your practice;

  • Second live session: Friday 11th September 2009, 10.00-12.00 (delivered in Moodle).

The aim of this workshop is to explore the freely available AccessApps suite of Open Source and freeware tools to support accessibility in teaching and learning practices. There are over 60 tools available that can be downloaded and run from a memory stick and during the workshop participants will be able to find out more about the tools in general, use a selection of the tools during the workshop, and reflect on how they can be used within their own teaching and learning.
(Overall workshop time commitment: 7.5 hours of CPD)
