E-Guides

The E-Guides programme, developed by NIACE for LSIS, is an excellent three days for training deliverers to find out how technology can support and enhance the delivery of learning.

Detailed below are some of the tools used in this training, some of which are free of charge and others which can be purchased through the Suffolk Learning Consortium at competitive prices.
 

AccessApps is an initiative supported by the JISC Regional Support Centres (RSC) and JISC TechDis and consists of over 60 open source and freeware Windows applications, running from a USB stick. AccessApps provides a range of solutions to support writing, reading and planning as well as sensory, cognitive and physical difficulties.
Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds.
CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)
The Charity Technology Exchange supplies software and hardware, which has been donated by major suppliers, for a small administration fee.

Doodle is ideal if you are trying to plan a meeting or event and want to offer a range of dates / times to people to see who is available when. It also integrates with Microsoft Outlook.

The eXe project is developing a freely available Open Source authoring application to assist teachers and academics in the publishing of web content without the need to become proficient in HTML or XML mark-up. Resources authored in eXe can be exported in IMS Content Package, SCORM 1.2, or IMS Common Cartridge formats or as simple self-contained web pages.

The Hot Potatoes suite includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is not freeware, but it is free of charge for those working for publicly-funded non-profit-making educational institutions, who make their pages available on the web.

livescribe Smartpens a clever device for students and teachers, or anyone else who has to take lots of notes; makes an audio and digital copy of your notes and drawings.
 
MailChimp - helps you design email newsletters, share them on social networks, integrate with services you already use, and track your results. FREE for up to 2,000 users.

We have used it for members to sign up and for us to send e-newsletters.
Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - FREE, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single-teacher site to a University with 200,000 students.
Microsoft® Office Live - provides a comprehensive suite of 'cloud' computing services, including document storage and collaboration.
Microsoft® Photo Story 3 for Windows - turn pictures into a story and add background music, can be used in presentations or put on your website.

The Institute For Learning (IfL) promotes a CPD model based on reflective practice and is committed to working with colleges and other providers to ensure teachers are able to engage in professional development. The CPD portal provides a suite of tools to support teachers in this.
RoboBraille is an e-mail service which can convert digital text documents into either Braille or audio files.
SimDis - This site contains a collection of computer based artefacts that simulate aspects of disability. It is intended that the simulations will be used for training and awareness raising activities with staff and for teaching students in areas where an understanding of disability is required.
SlideShare - is the world's largest FREE community for sharing presentations. Upload and share your content on Social Media sites or embed into a web-page.
SMOG (simplified measure of gobbledygook) is a formula that gives a readability level for written material. Readability is an attempt to match the reading level of written material to the "reading with understanding" level of the reader.

Snippy - How often have you carefully selected some text from a Web page and copied it to an email message? Snippy makes this a snap! Simply click on the little Snippy icon in the taskbar, and mark out the region of the screen that you want to copy - that's it, you're done! It provides anytime, anywhere professional development with teachers teaching teachers. In addition, teachers can post videos designed for students to view in order to learn a concept or skill.

Turning Point Student Voting System - add interactivity to your learning delivery and involve all your learners, collect information for 'happy sheets', save data for your CPD.

Xerte is a fully-featured e-learning development environment for creating rich interactivity. Xerte is aimed at developers of interactive content who will create sophisticated content with some scripting, and Xerte can be used to extend the capabilities of Xerte Online Toolkits with new tools for content authors.
XPERT (Xerte Public E-learning ReposiTory) project is a JISC funded project to explore the potential of delivering and supporting a distributed repository of e-learning resources created and seamlessly published through the open source e-learning development tool called Xerte Online Toolkits. Learners and educators can use XPERT to search a growing database of open learning resources suitable for students at all levels of study in a wide range of different subjects.
VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice, text, audio file, or video (via a webcam).
