E-Guides

The E-Guides programme, funded by the LSC and delivered by NIACE, is an excellent three days for training deliverers to find out how technology can support and enhance the delivery of learning.

Detailed below are some of the tools used in this training, some of which are free of charge and others which can be purchased through the Suffolk Learning Consortium at competitive prices.

AccessApps is an initiative supported by the JISC Regional Support Centres (RSC) and JISC TechDis and consists of over 60 open source and freeware Windows applications, running from a USB stick. AccessApps provides a range of solutions to support writing, reading and planning as well as sensory, cognitive and physical difficulties.
Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds.
CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)
Picture - Interactive Whiteboard eBeam Interactive Whiteboards - dual purpose; use as an electronic flipchart or to add interactivity to PowerPoint presentations. PC/laptop and digital projector needed.

The eXe project is developing a freely available Open Source authoring application to assist teachers and academics in the publishing of web content without the need to become proficient in HTML or XML mark-up. Resources authored in eXe can be exported in IMS Content Package, SCORM 1.2, or IMS Common Cartridge formats or as simple self-contained web pages.
The Institute For Learning (IfL) promotes a CPD model based on reflective practice and is committed to working with colleges and other providers to ensure teachers are able to engage in professional development. Our CPD portal provides a suite of tools to support teachers in this.
Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single-teacher site to a University with 200,000 students.
Microsoft® Photo Story 3 for Windows - turn pictures into a story and add background music, can be used in presentations or put on your website.

The Hot Potatoes suite includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is not freeware, but it is free of charge for those working for publicly-funded non-profit-making educational institutions, who make their pages available on the web.
SimDis - This site contains a collection of computer based artefacts that simulate aspects of disability. It is intended that the simulations will be used for training and awareness raising activities with staff and for teaching students in areas where an understanding of disability is required.
SMOG (simplified measure of gobbledygook) is a formula that gives a readability level for written material. Readability is an attempt to match the reading level of written material to the "reading with understanding" level of the reader.

Snippy - How often have you carefully selected some text from a Web page and copied it to an email message? Snippy makes this a snap! Simply click on the little Snippy icon in the taskbar, and mark out the region of the screen that you want to copy - that's it, you're done! The cut-out image will now be in your clipboard, and you can paste it in another application. FREE DOWNLOAD
TeacherTube - is an online community for sharing instructional videos, filling a need for a more educationally focused, safe venue for teachers, schools, and home learners. It provides anytime, anywhere professional development with teachers teaching teachers. In addition, teachers can post videos designed for students to view in order to learn a concept or skill.
Teachit Timer - Everyone needs a timer sometimes in class – use it on screen or projected for starters, timed activities, group work or games. You can even choose your final alert sound - a whistle, a gong, a dog barking ... and more ... See Teachit.co.uk for other handy tools.
Turning Point Student Voting System - add interactivity to your learning delivery and involve all your learners, collect information for 'happy sheets', save data for your CPD.
